‘Merican Magpie

126 / November 2020 / Joe Choi

It’s November and we all know what’s around the corner…while I usually try to stay away from politics, I’m feeling pretty anxious about where this country is headed. The last few years have made it abundantly clear that we’re more divided than ever, tech companies and social media are playing around with us, and it doesn’t seem like we’re well-equipped to deal with any kind of crisis whether it’s a natural disaster or the pandemic.  On the flip side, maybe we are too dependent on other countries and California doesn’t have it all figured out.   Whatever this is now, especially with the virus spiking again, things are looking bleak.  The amount of misinformation and lack of decency is insane.  Anyway, before I get myself into trouble, I just hope we find a way to vaccinate our politics as much as we need to vaccinate ourselves of COVID-19.  Here’s to hoping that we can cut through the noise and focus on what really matters.

As far as the mix goes, these are the twelve songs that I came to love the most.  As many as four different versions of the mix existed at one point including failed attempts more focused on maintaining a heavier post-punk feel (see the Fontaine D.C. and Ought openers), a bluegrass mix that never made it past six tracks and then a couple different versions that were more consistently synth pop and folk in nature.  At the end of the day, I just really wanted to be happy with the collection of the songs from start to finish and this is where it ended up.  Happy upcoming election day all!

If not a retreat, it almost sounds like a defensive rebuke of “Big” — Fontaines' last album opener, the Read more on Last.fm more...
