Meet Me At Our Shot

129 / February 2021 / Kristin Kelly

This is my longest mix ever. (Not my latest, though...by a day!) I kept trying to cut songs, because some of them aren’t crazy stand out ones, but I’ve been really liking all of them together. So, I kept it long, and maybe a little messy. Like my son’s hair, despite my mother’s visible disdain on Zoom. And some may be happy and/or shocked to hear not one indie folk song or hint of twang. Barely a duet in there. But a lot of Brits, which might be a pleasant accent and departure from my usual. I spent the last month and a half rereading my favorite book, Lonesome Dove, the near 900 page western about a cattle drive from Texas to Montana, so my fill of cowboy was had there. Musically, I veered. Been listening to a lot of new, British, R&B-influenced, predominantly black artists, and this is the end result. It’s on the slower side, but with good energy. Like a mid-day, cbd-infused, light roast with extra foam sculpted into two swans kissing. I keep imagining that this is what I’ll play during the cocktail hour of my first dinner party post-pandemic, or at least post-vaccination. In the meantime, I’ll just keep listening to it while making my kids their fifth pbj of the day.

  1. The Anxiety / Meet me at Our Spot

I've had this song as number one for the mix for about 6 months now. Marlowe HATES it. For me, it embodies the apt energy of now, infused with nostalgia, hope, and anxiety. Anyway, I just love the idea of texting a friend to "meet me at our spot".

  3. Choker / Lucky

  4. Bakar / Hell N Back

“She liked petty crimes, she had green eyes, like Mountain Dew.” Love that. Though Matt argues that Mountain Dew is technically yellow. He’s a literalist.

  8. The 1975 / If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know)

Almost made it on the Best Of, and admittedly not totally in keeping with this mix's "thesis", but super catchy tune. Warning: you’ll think you are walking into an Enya song until 49 seconds in. Then you’re full on bad perm and oversized Genesis-inspired blazer. Also, discussion question: Does one more often win or lose a heated argument with the line “Maybe I’d like you better if you took off your clothes”?

  9. Arlo Parks / Sophie

Had a hard time choosing which song of hers to include. I love her surprising and funny (dark) lyrics. Rhyming Vitamins with Ritalin just wins me over every time. Also “I talk to girls that bring their switchblades to the function and dye their buzzcuts black” So good.
