93 / February 2018 / Bryn Chernoff

This month's mix has no theme and is all over the map -- these songs have been in my regular rotation over the last few months or weeks. Stuck in my head. Playing on repeat. Renewed love for some very familiar ones. Plus some new discoveries. Find the mix's title in the first track, an old song I've been blasting again in the car, laughing at and loving.

  2. A Tribe Called Quest / The Chase, Pt. II

This is from one of the first CDs I ever purchased, seventh grade probably. And this song is as good as it ever was. 100% solid from start to finish. A classic hip hop song bragging about prowess, but with clever rhymes. I feel like an old lady 'cause all I wanna do is CONTRAST THIS WITH WHAT IS ON THE RADIO THESE DAYS.

  4. Erykah Badu / Time's a Wastin'

  5. Curtis Mayfield / So in Love

Another familiar one worth revisiting. This stood out to me on one of Frank Ocean's blonded lists, a series of playlists through Apple Music that I've enjoyed most of.

Curtis Mayfield (June 3, 1942 – December 26, 1999) was an American soul, funk and rhythm and blues, singer-songwriter and guitarist from Chicago, Illinois. Mayfield is probably best known for his anthemic music with The Impressions and for the soundtrack to the blaxploitation film Superfly. Perhaps because he didn't cross over to the pop audience as heavily as Motown's stars, it may be that the scope of Curtis Mayfield's talents and contributions have yet to be fully recognized. 6. James Vincent McMorrow / I Lie Awake Every Night

Found this artist pretty recently and am excited by his music. It feels a bit like a Feist / Mayer Hawthorne mashup, a combo I'm totally satisfied by. And his songs have some diversity, plus the last two albums (this being from the earlier of the two, 2016) were really good throughout. Excited to keep listening to him. We'll see if it sticks.

  7. Amy Winehouse / Wake Up Alone (Original Recording)

I'm a deep believer in Amy Winehouse, perhaps no surprise to any of you. Any time I can get a fresh appreciation of any of her songs, it's a gift, since the catalog is naturally so limited. But I love this version, this original of a familiar song of hers. The meter, if that's the word? 123, 123? And her voice continues to strike awe.

  8. Hot Sugar / Sinkies

I feel weird and hesitant in the beginning of this song but then the bass drops in and the tone warms up, the melody offers comfort and then I like it. But by the end I'm undecided again...

  10. Patsy Cline / Strange

Have I discussed Patsy on earlier mixes? I can't remember but she is one of my true loves. And my current working pre-40th-birthday fantasy is to realize the dream of starting a casual, unsuccessful but fulfilling Patsy Cline cover band. So one by one I'm trying to memorize all her songs and this is the latest one I've fallen for and learned.

Okay this song is maybe too groovy groovy but I think it's just sick enough. Stevie's voice. The hook. I heard it on my favorite a.m. show in Portland (https://www.opb.org/kmhd/programs/the-morning-session/). Hang in there?
