Rebirth of Pink

139 / December 2021 / Lindsay Schnarr

I was struck by how many artists that I've known and loved for years produced new albums this year. I'm sure there are blogs dedicated to the discussion of this trend. It seems obvious in some ways, the pressure put on social expression through all that has happened in the past couple years. I attempted to focus on the new stuff from old(er) artists in this mix, as it also felt relevant in my personal life. Our daughter, Elliott Rose was born this fall and with her unfolding, we have been experiencing all that baby stuff again with new eyes. It's amazing how just knowing how fast newborns become babies, become toddlers, become kids and teenagers and adults... puts the pressure on to really absorb it all as fully as possible. And it's still never fully possible!

This mix is somewhat inspired by the simple love I feel for our daughter, and the joy and vulnerability that comes with jumping back into something with renewed eyes. It's also (stay with me here) about how I've come to embrace the color pink. I never enjoyed this color as I found it silly and overly gender associated with all things "girly." As we've received pink hats after pink gloves after pink onesies and socks and dresses for our baby girl... I've come to realize, Elliott looks BEAUTIFUL in pink! I'm now actively seeking it out and realizing that Simon also loves this color. It's odd how we can decide something is not for us for so long, and then just like that, something sheds new light and poof, it's all new again. It's been like this for us with becoming parents, something we never really thought we'd embrace and now are just all in, and in love. An architecture professor I had talked about how the greatest greats knew how to reinvent themselves. It feels like this is a time in all of our lives for that. This mix leans into the sweet, the soft, and perhaps even the strong unfolding of newness.
