Subaru Nights

135 / August 2021 / Joe Choi

My mid-90s Subaru Outback was my trusted whip for more than 10 years after I took it off my parents’ hands après college. I put over 200,000 miles on that car mainly driving back to Amherst from wherever I lived at the time. While that car had a slipping transmission and barely enough power to get me onto a local highway, it was a work horse and always came through when needed. With all the life experiences shared and music I listened to while in that car (including Burnmix on CDs!), it’s the one car I had any emotional attachment to. Seeing the title ‘Subaru Nights’ instantly evoked memories of my late-night drives up Route 2 and I-91 from southeastern Connecticut and served as the inspiration for this mix. Hope you enjoy!

  6. Dehd / Loner

    More Info from Last.FM

Dehd are a dissent to excess. The Chicago indie-rock trio, who use a total of four instruments if a snare drum and a floor tom count as two, have grown into masters of maximizing mileage. They’re the plate of noodles that staves off hunger for hours longer than the $15 brunch. They’re the extra-puffy secondhand coat that retains more heat than the North Face winter catalog. They’re the basement unit with bumpy, self-applied caulking that stays watertight while the neighbors’ mansion floods - Pitchfork Read more on Last.fm. more...

  13. Feng Suave / Venus Flytrap

    More Info from Last.FM

The music of Amsterdam-based psych pop/soul duo Feng Suave is reminiscent of bygone times when vocals are drowned in reverb and instruments are seemingly recorded under water. Because the soulful vocal melodies, alluding to the 60s and 70s, and punchy, seismic bass lines make for a warm, genre-defying, psychedelic deluge of airwaves embellished with dreamy effects, at times the music sounds more like an audacious attempt to communicate with extraterrestrial intelligence rather than two boys playing pop songs. 14. Insecure Men / Subaru Nights

After Adamczewski was temporarily kicked out of the Fat White Family to rehab from drug addiction, he teamed up with his schoolfriend Romans-Hopcraft (Childhood). They released their eponymous debut album in 2018. Considering Adamczewski is one of the main songwriters in the Fat Whites, and that the brothers Lias and Nathan Saudi from the same band helped out with the songwriting for the album, it comes as no surprise that the lyrics of Insecure Men cover the same seedy topics of paedophilia and premature death, in particular in the entertainment industry.
