The Best of Jason Isbell

99 / August 2018 / Kristin Kelly

Per our conversation at JK's Burnmixer Mixer, and in honor of Andy's love for revisited artists, I decided to dedicate this mix to the most invoked musician over the years. Jason, it's always been you. In all seriousness, I did remove some songs that may or may not have included Tallest Man on Earth, due to the fact that we all have been adequately exposed to the little guy. But I did keep Cat Power in there, because I'm excited about her return, and it's only a minute and change long...and I sort of want her to beat out Jason Isbell in Burnmix popularity. Not all the artists are new to the Burnmixers, but I tried to keep the repetition in check. Saunders and Bryn, we missed you at the mixer. Next time a party is planned, can you make sure you're not moving states or having a baby? You both were with us in spirit and music that night.

  1. The War and Treaty / Hi Ho

After I heard this for the first time, I didn’t have a choice…it had to start the mix. Wish I’d been able to see them at the Newport Folk Fest.

  2. Morningsiders / Empress

I just love tap-dancing and clapping percussions here, and the break into the chorus is really enjoyable. And the horn solo. That said, this does feel like a pretty lame romantic plea. Sort of akin to Adele’s “Hello” (don’t pretend like you don’t know that song). Even though he names the song Empress, ostensibly for the woman he’s trying to win back, I don’t know if I would buy it. “I was a fool for loving her over you…and if I fall, I really hope you’ll call, ‘cause I’m not over you.” Hmmm. Send to voicemail.

  3. Dark Dark Dark / In Your Dreams

An eerily theatrically circus of a song. Discordant, complete with accordian, strangely hungry choral humming, harrowing violin, rambling piano. I still don’t know whether to love or not love this song, but I keep going back to it.

Minneapolis-based chamber-folk sextet Dark Dark Dark revel in the wonder that is around us always. On their breathtaking sophomore album Wild Go, which arrives October 5, 2010 via Supply and Demand Music, the band has created a stirring reminder to seek out that magic. Their dramatic sound sets Nona Marie Invie’s soaring, haunting voice against age-old instrumentation that evokes the soundtrack to a beautiful film. The 10-song collection is a marked evolution for the group Read more on Last.fm more...

  4. Cat Power / Wanderer

Did Chan Marshall just give her hand to Jesus? Is her new album going to be a collection of breathily mewing born-again hymns? I’m sort of hoping not, but if anyone can go that direction, she could pull it off. Regardless, I find this a pretty minute and a half.

  5. Childish Gambino / This is America

I’m sure you’ve all read about and seen this, but it’s genius: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYOjWnS4cMY As are the multiple hooks, lyrics, and moves in this song. On different days, I've had different sections of the song stuck in my head.

  6. Maximum Balloon / Let It Grow (featuring Karen O & Tunde Adebimpe)

I’m a fan of the slight lyrical overlapping here. It’s a (debatably too) long, rolling stroll of a song, but a good walk.

  8. Mt. Joy / I’m Your Wreck

I saw them open for The Head and the Heart, and was mildly interested in them, but mostly just annoyed by their “Jesus drives an Astrovan” song. Then Matt (my husband) started playing this song over and over…and over, and it got stuck. I still think the lyrics should be “Life’s a Pill I swallow”, not “Life’s a Bitch I swallow”, but I like this song’s revving energy.

  10. The Staves / In the Long Run

JK and I have been working on this song. It might be too sweet for some, but I really love their live in-a-field recording of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

  11. Lady Jane / Papa was a Rodeo (Magnetic Fields)

Esperanza Friel, aka “Lady Jane”, played at Ode recently. She had a quietly beautiful voice with subtle, yet discernable, swagger. I can see her really growing into that even more. This is a home recording posted on Bandcamp, so it may not hold up to the rest in the production department, but I really loved her performance of it at Ode, and I was hoping you’d be able to get a feel for her. Definitely worth checking out if she’s performing around. I wasn’t familiar with the song, but I love it now.
