September 2017

88 / September 2017 / Andrew Bagge

I am humbled to be here and offer you the much-anticipated September 2017 music compilation - otherwise known as Burn Mix 88. This is my first Burn Mix with the group (thanks for lowering the drawbridge) but it is certainly not my first mix tape. Throughout high school, college, and adulthood I’ve been chasing that perfect mix. As Nick Hornby said in High Fidelity, "...making a tape is like writing a letter - there's a lot of erasing and rethinking and starting again, and I wanted it to be a good one. . . A good compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do." I've had a lot of great mixes in the past -high speed dubbed in my two cassette tape player or downloaded and burned to a CD and handed to a friend. There is no greater gift than the mix tape.

The music that moves me the most is a song that is able to transmit a bit of melancholy my way. Yes, the new guy is indeed pulling that card. It is one of the hardest emotions to express through music - perhaps because it is the hardest to fake. Aptly, I was chosen for the September mix which is the time when everything dies. Fall is a time that is both wildly beautiful and deeply introspective (at least for me). My best mixed tapes were fall mix tapes. I hope that you will listen to this mix on a long country drive - Be sure to roll the windows down, blast the heat, and think long and hard about the sad beauty of life. Sorry, but - its my first day.;

  1. Andy Shauf / Drink My Rivers

I recently discovered Andy Shauf at the beginning of the summer. Born and raised in the Canadian prairie, this guy has no doubt been through some long winters. If you dig this song, I would suggest listening to the 2016 album The Party and the rest of this album The Bearer of Bad News.

    More Info from Last.FM

Andy Shauf is a Canadian singer-songwriter from Regina, Saskatchewan. He plays several instruments, including clarinet. Known for honest, self-reflective songs as well as captivating lyrical works of fiction and an intimate live show, Shauf is considered one of the most intriguing emerging songwriters around. His release, The Bearer of Bad News, explores themes of uncertainty, curiosity and spirituality. “I think spirituality is a part of life whether you are religious or not, even if you’re just superstitious. 2. adrianne lenker / Indiana

I discovered AdriAnne Lenker’s side project after getting hooked on her beautifully strange voice as the front of the band Big Thief. She put out three great albums in 2014 that are a treasure trove of beautifully sparse songs. She is a fantastic songwriter.

    More Info from Last.FM

Adrianne Lenker is a singer/songwriter from Minneapolis, Minnesota and is the lead singer and plays guitar in the critically acclaimed band Big Thief. 3. Ian Fitzgerald / Melinda Down the Line

I love this album by Ian Fitzgerald. It is the country drive windows down album. I would also recommend the song Something to Remember me By. He has a great voice.

    More Info from Last.FM

Ian Fitzgerald is a songster. If he had been born a hundred years earlier, he probably would have learned the songs of the day and provided the entertainment in between sales pitches at a medicine show. If he had been born forty years earlier, he might have made his way to Greenwich Village or, a few years later, down to Austin to congregate with his fellow songwriters. As it is, though, Ian finds himself in hard times for songsters. So he writes the best songs he can and plays them for whoever will listen. Read more on Last.fm more...

  4. Leif Vollebekk / Cairo Blues

Leif Vollebekk, also has a great voice and is also from Canada (sensing a trend here). Stone cold silence in the room means the record is at its end. cay-row, cay-row.

    More Info from Last.FM

Leif Vollebekk is a Canadian singer-songwriter, based in Montreal. Since the beginning of his career, Leif has performed at the Newport Folk Festival and shared stages with Daniel Lanois, Beth Orton, Sinéad O’Connor, Patrick Watson, Coeur de Pirate, William Fitzsimmons and Sam Amidon. 5. The Books / Free Translator

This is where the mix starts to shift from acoustic songs to a semi-electronic composition style I’ve been digging lately. The Books are very talented at taking found sounds, song fragments, and other potpourri, and combining them into beautiful songs.

    More Info from Last.FM

The story of The Books began in 2000, when Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong met through a friend in New York City. Sharing similar interests but different backgrounds in acoustic music and found sound, Zammuto and de Jong took their sonic experiments to the studio. Eventually, with some urging by Tom Steinle of Tomlab Records, they created what would become their debut record, 'Thought for Food', in 2002. Within a year, the Books relocated to Hot Springs, NC, and recorded and released 'The Lemon of Pink'. Read more on Last.fm more...

  6. Panda Bear / Take Pills

Person Pitch is probably one of the most influential albums I encountered after my college years. A thorough listen is highly recommended. This is that kind of album that is initially challenging but then slowly grows and grows on you until you can’t listen to anything else. Front man Noah Lennox works by himself creating loops and tangles of found sounds and recordings while layering in his distinct vocals (reminiscent of an old worn Beach Boys record). Noah is also in the band Animal Collective.

  7. Caribou / Bees

Caribou is similar to Panda Bear (both animals). Caribou works solo writing all of the pieces of the song and recording and performing them separately. I highly recommend all of his albums.

Caribou is Canadian Dan Snaith (b. 1978), who formerly recorded under the moniker Manitoba. Known for altering his sound with each subsequent release, he incorporates electronic psychedelia, krautrock rhythms, and breakbeat drums and creates a swirling, lush, musical panorama. Snaith also creates more club-oriented dance music under the name Daphni. Snaith grew up in Dundas, Ontario, Canada, which gave its name to a song from his debut album Start Breaking My Heart. 8. Sylvan Esso / Die Young

Sylvan Esso is one of my new favorites. Their 2014 self-titled album was on heavy repeat in the Bagge household. Amelia Meath of the folk band Mountain Man joined forces with electronic producer Nick Sanborn and they made a beautiful hybrid of their two backgrounds. Their much-anticipated second album came out this year and fell a little short for me – as anticipated second albums do. The band then released an all-acoustic version of the album that is fantastic. The album is The Echo Mountain Sessions and it converts the electronic album into an all-acoustic album while collaborating with a ton of bands you know (look it up!).

    More Info from Last.FM

Sylvan Esso is a Durham, NC, USA duo of vocalist Amelia Meath and electronic musician Nick Sanborn. Their début was the double A-side 12" Hey Mami / Play It Right (16 Jul 2013), featuring a capella and instrumental versions of each song. Meath’s powerful voice is front and center, unjoined by fellow harmonizers as it is in her folk group, Mountain Man. Sanborn, who plays bass in the genre-destroying Megafaun, creates intricate, pulsing grooves for Meath’s voice to inhabit. 10. Nick Drake / From the Morning

What would a fall album be without a little Nick Drake?

    More Info from Last.FM

Nick Drake (Nicholas Rodney Drake, Rangoon, Burma, June 19, 1948 - Tanworth-in-Arden, England, November 25, 1974) was an English folk singer known for his gentle, enigmatic songs and his virtuosic right-hand finger picking technique. Although he recorded only three albums, critics and fellow musicians hold his work in very high esteem. Drake failed to find a wide audience during his lifetime and had a strong aversion to performing. Since his death, however, Drake's music has gained a significant cult following.
