The first time I heard about “Hot Girl Summer” was when a friend’s daughter broke up with her boyfriend in June, got a tattoo of Medusa on her chest, and declared that this was going to be her Hot Girl Summer. Fast forward to mid-July, and she’d accrued a thigh tattoo, a part time job at an ice cream shop, and multiple suitors, one of whom brought her Dunkin Donuts every morning. This is my version of Hot Girl Summer, past the dog days of unbridled youth, but not so far out that one wouldn’t be able to accept a cruller from a lover (or a husband who owes you one). This started out as an all-female line-up, but I let some of the boys in at the end. Because you’re not all bad. So, here’s to your own Hot Girl Fall. Enjoy it, you deserve it. Just don't look her straight in the eye.

Softee / Oh No
This has been my go-to driving song for the past six months. I have my cousin, Brydie, to thank for it. Love the retro vibe, the perfectly screeching high notes followed the reprieve of the chorus. Just wishing I’d kept that hot pink and black swirled unitard I used to perform hip hop dances in the Kansas malls to C&C Music Factory. Jazz hands, kids!

Mayra Andrade / Afeto
I find this song an incredibly good “working song” that could easily morph into a happy hour.

In 2006, Andrade released her first CD “Navega”, on the Sony/BMG label. In June 2001, a young Capeverdean singer, hardly 16 years old, completely unknown until then Read more on Last.fm more...

Arthur Moon / Homonormo
Interested to hear how people respond to this song. It’s weird, right? The way the beat kind of trips and catches up, falls behind again. I keep wanting to do weird dances to it…a mix of The Robot and The Worm. Clearly, I’m tapping into my 80’s/90’s

Your Smith / Debbie
Always smitten with clapping percussions. My mom had a friend named Debbie. She had a mean perm, smoked menthols, rocked a Banana Boat tan, and named her daughter Kristin, who went by Krissy. Krissy was a year older. She taught me how to kill a slug with salt, steal a Highlights magazine from my neighbor, Gale, and smash Melissa’s pumpkins in the street. My defense: “Oh Debbie, what’d you get me into…this always happens when I listen to you. You know I was only doing what you told me to do. I blame it on you.”

Brittany Howard / Stay High
It’s a summer by the pool song. Or a watching the leaves somersault to the ground song. Or a sitting by the fire on your bearskin song.

Brock Berrigan / Four Walls and an Amplifier
Another good “getting work done in a good mood” kind of song. I usually tire of really repetitive songs, but like really good Sylvan Esso, it’s nicely meditative, and the perfect length. All in for this one.

Brock Berrigan is the alias of a drunk-savant musician/producer out of Astoria, Queens. Berrigan dons a rooster mask in his photo shoots/music videos and spends the rest of his time alone, meticulously plugging away in his basement studio. Sure, the hip-hop cockerel mask adds an element of silly pretension, but in talking to Brock one can tell that the anonymous persona is less a stunt aimed toward gaining popularity through mystique than a self-conscious departure from his person. Wild Child / 1996
A Cat Power meets Lake Street Dive feel. I like the horns in here too. They seem to be arguing with the singer, then finally agreeing. What were you doing in 1996? I was 16 and slinging chicken salad sandwiches at a place called Adrien's Cafe, where the boss, Guy, would come up behind all the girls with pickle spears and pretend it was his tongue on our necks. No nostalgia, folks.

Just a pretty duet in French by people named Angele and Romeo Elvis. What could be wrong about that? Also, I recommend watching the looping video on Spotify. Skis on the beach. That’s all I’ll say.

boygenius / Ketchum, ID
The anti-hero or foil to the first song on the mix. A sad, slow, beautiful song to close out the mix. The chorus and harmonies of this song always bring me to tears. Such a power trio too. I've been having a major Phoebe Bridgers moment (I know I'm late to the game).
