Do You Love Me Now? Election Edition

78 / November 2016 / Andy Grogan

It's election month. In just a few days, it'll all be over. How will it end?

Much like Hillary, the mix below wasn't my first choice. My original mix, "Cocteau Rock," was all Cocteau Twins and Van Halen (David Lee Roth-era). You can find that mix here: https://open.spotify.com/user/norascout/playlist/1zJ9ZTWAdtkE3sT71mxZCP Think of it as my Bernie mix - near and dear to my heart, but not what the electorate thinks it wants.

Then, I worked on another mix called "Beatle Parts." The cover art was going to be a musical staff, with actual beetle parts where the notes should be. It was all songs that evoke the Beatles - either directly or indirectly. You can find that mix here: https://open.spotify.com/user/norascout/playlist/6g2BqQpdaRQqQe1iZT0SXD It's actually a lot of fun, and I suspect everyone will be able to spot a Beatle influence or two.

But, I abandoned both of those. Assuming Hillary knocks it out of the park, I've made a mix to evoke the Clinton 90s. My 90s. Or at least some of the music I was listening to in the 90s. I left a lot out, but this is a good look back. For me, it's a snapshot of the moment just before the internet changed everything. These bands came to me via friends, via college radio, via record store clerks. I had to search for these records. Sometimes, you'd stumble across an album that you didn't even know existed by a band you loved. Lots of these bands still had some mystery to them.

I tried to include some variety.

So, dig in.

  1. Mary Lou Lord / His Indie World

Intro: Lots of mid-90s band references here, some of which are in this mix. I figure her line "Give me my Joni, my Mick, Neil, and Bob," is for JK.

  2. The Jesus Lizard / Boilermaker

This is not indicative of the mix. Just an intro. Saw them open for Sonic Youth in 1991. Lyrics seem fitting for November 9, assuming all works out and Trump is crushed: "I'm calm now. I've calmed down, but I'm shaking." The guitarist is now a librarian in Nashville.

  14. Sebadoh / Brand New Love

From Western Mass! Dissonant and (at times) loud, but remarkably beautiful. For some of you, it might hit you wrong, but there's great melody and majesty buried in there. (I like how it starts off fast then drags)

Lots of songs under 2 minutes. This is one.

    More Info from Last.FM

Honeymoon killers were a New York four-piece (not to be confused with the Belgian band named after the same 1970 psychotronic cinema classic) formed in the early 1980's. Firmly rooted in the aesthetics of the splatter drive-in, where badness is just the starting point. The fake voodoo music, recorded in "four track horror fidelity," is abrasive and primitive — like the Cramps with less-commercial instincts and an even sicker sense of humor.
