Southern Comfort

6 / November 2010 / Saunders Robinson

This mix reflects much of the music that that I’ve been listening to while reconnecting with my Southern roots, namely the Mississippi Delta, Memphis and New Orleans, with a few indie splashes that I picked up from WERS during my time in Boston.

  1. Buffy Sainte-Marie / Helpless

I discovered this track on a tripped-out blog http://www.aquariumdrunkard.com and think this is better than Neil Young's original. As the blogger said, "Like all great covers, it cuts to the essence."

  4. R.L. Burnside / Let My Baby Ride

If you can't get down to this, you've got no soul. This is a remixed version of juke-joint, front-porch blues from the North Mississippi hill country (as opposed to the Delta blues). Burnside, from Holly Springs, Mississippi, was a sharecropping cousin-in-law of Muddy Waters. He served time for killing a man, and later reportedly said, "I didn't mean to kill nobody ... I just meant to shoot the sonofabitch in the head. Him dying was between him and the Lord."
