if there was such a thing as an anti-workout mix, this may qualify. it's possible the mood of this sequence stems from the trickling thaw into spring and the glowing chartreuse green that is already fading from our rolling landscape, or perhaps simply my inner need to slow down and take it all in. this mix began as an impulse to observe the instrumental qualities of various tunes. rather than only include instrumental music (which was my initial inclination), i found it more satisfying to explore the instrumental intricacies of vocal, acoustic and electronic ranges. my only rule was to keep it mellow... to gather tunes in which the effort feels effortless. don't be surprised if you find yourself drifting a bit with the wind through this one. i've noticed fewer cars and more birds on my drive to work since sifting thru this series... arriving at work a few minutes later than usual with an unusually refreshing sense that for at least a moment, i'm secretly thankful for the minutes lost to air.

The Piano Guys / The Cello Song
discovered this song on our "solo piano" pandora station that i often listen to while studying or working from home... i've always appreciated the blend of classical and modern instrumental layering. the breaks at 1:30 and 2:30 are key.

Shakey Graves / Family and Genus
this song - i love. i wouldn't have known it without the burnmixers introducing me to shakey graves. this song just wiggles into my mind in the most sweet of spots. rich raspy vocals, funky rhythm, departing development in the instrumentation at 3:45 that carries the song through. dialogue recording is fun too.

Shakey Graves, aka Alejandro Rose-Garcia from Austin, Texas, plays a gnarly composite of blues and folk as a one-man-band of epic sonic proportions. The sound emitted from his hollow body guitar, mildly distorted amp and suitcase drum belie the young singer’s lean frame. He fingerpicks while keeping time with a double-pedal kick drum, hitting a snare fitted into his suitcase drum and a tambourine fashioned to its side. And when he sings, Rose-Garcia unleashes an unearthly howl. Read more on Last.fm more...

Indians / Magic Kids
discovered this recently on my drive to work when i often listen to the indie station xmu. love the keyboard progression, the pink floyd-esque lyrical movement, the overall cosmic quality. i imagine listening to this in a field at night dark enough to watch the stars move through the sky.

Feist / Caught a Long Wind
feist holds a special place in my past. she was part of my discovery of moving to amherst, nine years ago! her album reminder had just come out. i explored amherst with her by my side. the weaving of piano and violin between 3-4 mins creates an interesting sense of movement..

Marco Benevento / Fireworks
i cannot take credit for this song. andrew bagge (burnmix member #9??) introduced me to marco many years ago and this song, while my hubby thinks is like a circus show, creates such uniquely playful and light transitions, especially with the drop to percussion from 3 min out.

Radiohead / Present Tense
life long radiohead fan here... so this was a given, given that they just came out with their 9th studio album (who can name them all?), "moon shaped pool" that generated this track. thom's lyrics have always followed a certain lyrical instrumental quality that i find in line with the concept of this mix. this particular track, he "keeps it light" and "doesn't get too heavy"... the maracas rhythm and spanish guitar offer unique compliments to their more usual electronic base.

mr. grogan introduced me to beach house many years ago when i was still a wee arch grad student. believe it or not, he sent me a delivery to my front door, a beach house vinyl album! it's been love ever since. this song has that spatial mastery they are so good at... a little flaming lips, in a good way.

Sigur Ros / Agaetis Byrjun
how to write about sigur ros... i have painted to their music, cried and danced to their vocals... ever soaring, emotional, raw and spiritual. the vocals have always amazed me in their instrumental quality, perhaps simply because i do not speak icelandic, but i want to believe there is something more inherently pure about their music. i admittedly almost tackled a guy at cushman a couple years ago because he was wearing a black t-shirt with faintly visible yellow script "sigur ros" on the front. i'm pretty sure i would have taken it (or him) home with me if he'd offered.

senior kuhn introduced me to this surprisingly scarcely known, yet totally amazing artist a few years back. i've yet to see him live, though i know he has made a couple appearances in noho. his vocals and guitar are simple but intricate and... just so beautiful. i could listen to his albums over and over and over again.

Hozier / Work Song
i've probably created 50 choreography pieces to this song, mostly in my mind. the simplicity of the beat, and humming background vocals, feels very much like a slavery hymn. hollow and grim with just enough funky grit.

Patrick Watson / Lighthouse
this was the song i wasn't sure about, it gets intense at the end, but i decided it has to be here. instrumentally it's masterful. the piano so gentle and sweet at the start developing into something discordant with the wind instruments just before 2:00, and transforming into something almost Moody Blues-esque with full blown orchestral horns toward the end. the swirling development of this song feels tarantino worthy. i woke up with it in my head this morning and knew it had to go on the mix.

Eddie Vedder / Guaranteed
this is just, well, a good ending song, and eddie is a household favorite. his voice cannot be beat. my husband has fashioned his singing voice after his, which i cannot complain about. if you listen long enough, you'll here eddie's humming bonus track at around 4:40 for those of you still awake at the end of this finger picking serenade.
