2015 Best of the Rest

  1. Sharam (feat. Kid Cudi) / She Came Along

Kristin: I love so much about this song....the way it starts like it's coming uphill, or around the corner. I especially love how the woman's voice sounds so old-timey and distant.

  2. Wiz Khalifa (feat. Charlie Puth) / See You Again

Kristin: No, this isn't Sam Smith. And No, I didn't hear it when watching "Furious 7", though I'm sure that one is just as good as 5 and 6. But I love this song. I love that after hearing it, I have two songs stuck in my head: this one, and Free Falling ("It's been a long day"...living in Raseda....without you my friend).

  3. Father John Misty / Bored In The USA

Lindsay: This tune caught me early on in the year, and has haunted me regularly since. It's not a sweet song, or a fun one, and I fought with myself about submitting it for the "best of" simply because it is just so damn dark. That being said, what this man has to say, needs to be said... "And now I can't get off, but I can kind of deal" ... so much of this is so cringeworthy because he's talking about the stuff we all share but don't share. Can you believe he performed this on Letterman?? Brilliant, brave, powerful... best served in small doses with a strong martini.

  4. Courtney Barnett / Pedestrian At Best

Lindsay: On a lighter note, though perhaps not really, this woman's creativity blows my mind. This track, in particular, has kept my steady interest for much of this year... initially for it's effortlessly syncopated female ferocity, but later for my desire to dissect the phrasing of her lyrics... which just mush together when you read them, but manage to assemble into various configurations with her strangely monotoned voice. She grabbed me with "give me all your money and I'll make some origami honey" ... and tops it with "I suppose we all outgrow ourselves." Genius. Makes me want to drop a mic and walk off stage.

Barnett puts a lot of effort into sounding effortless. Her songs are wild and wooly and wordy, her lyrics plainspoken and delivered like she’s making them up on the spot. Barnett was originally a part of several bands, including Immigrant Union and The Olivettes before focusing on her solo work. Read more on Last.fm more...

  5. Rey Pila / Surveillance Camera

Joe: May invoke some finger wagging from Depeche Mode fans but I like it better than anything that I’ve heard from them. This track also just happens to be one of the more synthy tracks from their record, The Future Sugar, but the voice pervades throughout the album. The tie in to the Strokes is that they're signed to Julian Casablancas record label and he produced a few of their tracks including a pretty awesome rendition of Lady In Red. It comes to a crashing halt at the chorus but I think it’s worth fighting through.

  6. Albert Hammond, Jr. / Born Slippy

Joe: Both my entrees have direct ties to the Strokes and call on familiar sounds. Momentary Masters took up a good chunk of my ear space over the latter half of 2015, and this one is the most infectious of the bunch. As a bonus, it gives me the opportunity to include this gem from the late nineties that bears the same name. Would’ve been quite the way to bring in the New Year.

  7. Eza / We Keep The Lights Out

John: EZA is Ellery Bonham – a 22 year-old based in Nashville. I heard this song while perusing ITunes and digging into a compilation called Nashville Indie Spotlight 2016. I was hooked by the hooks. While it is surely formulaic electropop, I love the deep lush sound of this tune – reminiscent of Phil Spector’s “wall of sound” from the sixties. That sound was developed to allow music to push through AM radio, which was what we listened to pre-FM. The digitization of that wall of sound 50 plus years later is all-encompassing, especially on good speakers or headphones. I loved pairing this together with Sonny Landreth – opposite ends of the spectrum.

  8. Sonny Landreth / The High Side

John: I heard this song at a listening station (remember those?) at a bookstore up in Vermont. I am always struck by his incredible musicianship, unique style and the funky vibe he creates with his slide guitar. Beauty through simplicity – you can’t get much simpler than a 12 bar blues progression. One of my favorite songs of his is a cover of Randy Newman’s “Louisiana.” Sonny is 64, a young’un in my book, and hails from southwest Louisiana. His music rings of Zydeco and he has been called the “King of Slydeco.” Eric Clapton says he is one of the most advanced guitarists in the world and one of the most under-appreciated. I second that emotion. I would love to see him live.

Noah: I think technically the album came out in 2014, but he single and video came out in 2015 so I'm going with it. The cage match video was the #8 most viewed on Youtube, with almost 500 million views. It is definitely a head scratcher, but I couldn't look away, definitely a memorable song for me.

  14. Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats / S.O.B.

Noah: This is another song that wormed it's way into my consciousness with the help of some great videos. The official one puts Johnny Cash firmly tongue in cheek, at first I thought it was too corny, but that's certainly the point. The second was his turn on Jimmy Fallon, the dance moves!

  15. Frazey Ford / Done
