2019 Best of the Rest

116 / January 2020 / BurnMix

  1. Karen O & Danger Mouse / Turn the Light

Kristin: I just love this song. It seems to fit so many moods at once. It’s chill, but has that Karen-O edge. Dreamy with just enough strut. This whole album is really good.

  2. Shintaro Sakamoto / Mask on Mask

Andy: This is a good song, but I what I want to tell you about is a band called Rat Queen. They're low-fi, unpolished and out of tune (sometimes). Their album evoked memories of high school, when summer stretched out and time tracked differently. Not just slower. Something else. Broader. I don't know. The Sakamoto song is excellent, and his album has been on active duty for the last month or two, but the Rat Queen is nearer and dearer.

  3. Tyler, the Creator / RUNNING OUT OF TIME

Andrew: I picked Running out of time by Tyler the Creator off the Igor album - I've been listening to this album on repeat after I started the best of 2019 music search. It is a bit off brand for me but the way that the whole album works seamlessly together is really worth the listen. the album is restless and quirky, reminds me a lot of some early Outkast albums.

  4. Red Hearse / Half Love

Joe: Red Hearse fueled a lot of my 2019 and hopefully it kickstarts your New Years! Life can be hectic as hell but nothing that a little toe-tapping, head-bobbing or breaking out your best falsetto can't solve. Also a good reminder that there's no time for any sort of half love, half ass'ing or half anything at this point in my life. Wishing you all an amazing 2020!

  5. Julia Jacklin / Don't Know How To Keep Loving You

Noah: Phew, this one is raw. I first heard it via the live in studio version below. A great recording in it’s own right. I do agree with Andy that it could be a bit shorter, but I have to let that slide, it’s too good.

  7. Maggie Rogers / Fallingwater

Saunders: What makes this song is the relatable lyrics — "Hold on, I thought that I could take it from here, Oh, I thought that I was gone and I'm cleared. Now it's getting harder" — who can't relate to thinking that you're getting ahead and then realizing that you're about to face another mountain?

  9. Molly Tuttle / Take the Journey

John: This tune is from her debut album released this year. Molly (26) grew up in San Francisco, attended Berklee and has since moved to Nashville. Maybe she knows Grogan. Her guitar technique owes to her virtuoso style on the banjo. While I know this song is a dead giveaway as a Kuhn tune, I couldn’t resist adding it to this year’s mix….I just love the intense power of her playing.

  10. Leif Vollebekk / I'm Not Your Lover

Noah: I put Leif on a best-of a few years ago and this song follows a bit of the same format, but damn I love the story, love the guitar tone, the space, the jittery jangly riffs. “You’re a sign on the highway covered in rain.” Damn. Don’t worry about me, still happily married! But these two songs of love lost stuck out for me this year.

  11. Taylor Swift / Lover

Saunders: This ballad's 1950s-feel evokes being the last two people swaying together on the dance floor.  Paired with Swift's voice, this song had me at me at "can we always be this close?"

  13. Wilco / Love is Everywhere (Beware)

Kristin: Simple, very Wilco, but with this beautiful riff throughout that literally is magic on Sam during our Northampton to Amherst and back commutes. Give him a graham cracker and this song on repeat, and life is good and love is everywhere.

  14. Aldous Harding / Treasure

Bryn: My good friend and former radio show co-host took me to see Aldous Harding this year and I’d never heard of her til then. She’s fantastic and odd and charming and a great talent. She held our attention in the packed Music Hall of a Williamsburg where the crowd was nearly silent for each sparse and delicious number. Hard to pick one song, the whole album from this year is solid.

  15. John Sylvester / Bottom Finds You

John: This is out of the norm, but I included this song because I’ve probably listened to this song more than any other tune this year. John (aka Sylvie) is a friend of mine since grade school. We played in a band together in high school, gigged together summers in college and joined one another in northern Vermont after college to form Ducks on the Run. He’s never stopped playing/writing and is, in my mind, one of the best songwriters I know. I’ve always felt I had to get him into the studio to preserve some of his songs for all time. I finally got him into a local Amherst studio (Northfire) back in November. He recorded nine songs live - one take each - and left it all on the table. This song reflects some of the struggles he has faced over the years - and I think the lyrics speak for themselves. He lives in the Hudson Valley now with his beautiful wife, Winnie. He turns a phrase like no other. Enjoy this one.

  17. Lord Huron / When The Night Is Over

Andrew: Another great full album. After my surgery I listened to this album over and over again, its ethereal quality is really what gets me (possibly aided by drugs). Also, like Igor, the whole album deals with a sense of loss and struggles to get something back which was lost.

  18. Kali Malone / Litanic Cloth Wrung

Andy: This will wreck the flow of the mix, but I've appreciated this album because it slows me down and takes my head somewhere different. Fucking Trump.
