Septembers

160 / September 2023 / Noah Kuhn

A collection of tracks from the summer to take you into fall. Septembers are always the craziest month in our house. I had a false start on a mix all about midnights, but decided against it in the end. You can still get the special edition here though! Midnight Mix. Welcome back from all your summer adventures, not a chill to the winter but a nip to the air!

  1. Unknown Mortal Orchestra / Layla

The guitar solo is so tasty.

    More Info from Last.FM

Unknown Mortal Orchestra first dropped into the world in late 2010 as a bandcamp account carrying a single called ‘Ffunny Ffrends’. ‘Ffunny Ffrends’ was everything you imagined it might be – alien beatnik pop music that echoed 60s psychedelia and krautrock minimalism with just a hint of gentle weirdness that suggested its roots might equally lie in the verdant indie of the equally distant New Zealand scene. Ruban Nielson is a New Zealand native who had transplanted to Portland, Oregon, USA with his band The Mint Chicks. Read more on Last.fm more...

  2. The Teskey Brothers / I Get Up

Australian blues rock band, love his voice, and this track in particular is so tight.

    More Info from Last.FM

The Teskey Brothers is an Australian soul blues band formed in 2008. The band came to be from seeking blues and roots of the greats from an early age when exposed to musicians such as Peter Green, Otis Redding and Ray Charles. The boys would watch closely in awe as their teacher, Sam Linton Smith, performed at St. Andrews pub on a Sunday, the very same St. Andrews in which Josh and Sam Teskey set up to busk as boys. Thus began the musical convergence of Warrandyte Blues-Soul and everything in between. Read more on Last.fm more...

  3. Trampled By Turtles / Midnight on the Interstate

I actually made a "Midnight" mix after hitting on this track, but it ended up being a greatest hits of songs you all know so I scrapped it. I added a link to it in the comments above though since it's still a great collection of tunes. I love the harmonizing fiddles at the end of this song.

  4. Shovels & Rope & Shakey Graves / Unknown Legend

First of a few classic covers on this mix, have always loved it. Colliding with the very air she breathes.

    More Info from Last.FM

Shovels & Rope is American folk duo of husband and wife Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst from Charleston, South Carolina. The duo began with two guitars, a junkyard drum kit (harvested from an actual garbage heap- adorned with tamborines, flowers and kitchen rags), a handful of harmonicas, voices, and above all.. songs. Cary Ann Hearst & Michael Trent prefer to keep it simple. They have cleverly managed to take 3 separate recording projects and combine them into 1 cohesive Read more on Last.fm more...

  5. Thee Sacred Souls / Will I See You Again?

Great simple track, love the guitar tone, vox are killer.

    More Info from Last.FM

Inspired by the souldies around which they were reared, Alex Garcia and Sal Samano found chemistry when they began cutting bedroom demos of rhythm tracks together in 2019. Multi-instrumentals both, Alex migrated from the guitar to the drums where he discovered the sensitive touch and unique feel that would be the pillowy pulse of the band’s sound, while Sal learned to carve winding bass lines through the deep spidery grooves of their vamps. Though the jams they created together were scintillating Read more on Last.fm more...

  7. Boby Oroza & Cold Diamond & Mink / This Love

Sit back and put your feet up.

    More Info from Last.FM

When looking for a description of the music Bobby Oroza makes, you may lean into some familiar territory: vintage-sounding, dreamy, sensual, a deep cut on some wonderfully odd indie-love-film soundtrack. And, yes, all of those attributes are accurate—but still, they fall desperately short of describing what Bobby and company have provided us in a short amount of time. Raised in the immigrant-populated Eastern Center section of Helsinki, Finland, Bobby was born to a Bolivian mother and Finnish father. Read more on Last.fm more...

Walker's love of the DMB was highlighted in his dark interpretations of their songs on the 2018 covers album The Lillywhite Sessions. Read more on Last.fm more...
