So Begins the Braiding

112 / September 2019 / Lindsay Schnarr

So this mix, in addition to being a week late now, is inherently reflective of the amorphous state of consciousness that comes with entering motherhood. The drifting into and out of awakeness is something (thankfully) unique to this experience.  All summer, I've struggled to feel like I've been able to "accomplish" something, but even the most simple things have been elusive! As much as I've tried to fight it, that productive state of mind and life is a thing of the past, at least for the foreseeable future. This time is about being in the now and responding to that unexpected moment of need, whatever it may be... and finding such sweetness in that endless allowing. Surrendering to the slowness... that's where I am. I know I tend toward the chill side of music anyway, so there was a part of me that was wanting to do a big, jazzy mix this time around. But this is not that mix. I am not jazzy... I am drifty... I am quiet... I am love in all its spatiousness.

  1. Brandi Carlile / The Mother

I think at least 4 people asked me if I'd heard this when I was pregnant. I had, and yet, I hadn't. I hear the verses differently now. This is one of the best descriptions of the feeling of both wanting to go back to your own sense of self and surrendering to the love that keeps you from it. "Outside of my windows are the mountains and the snow I hold you while you’re sleeping and I wish that I could go All my rowdy friends around accomplishing their dreams But I am the mother of Evangeline." What a verse!

  2. Aldous Harding / The Barrel

This has been one of my favorite songs all summer. I spent a good amount of time trying to understand the lyrics. Any discussion is welcome! I do love the line (in keeping with the theme), "When you have a child, so begins the braiding... and in that braid you stay." So true, how 3 become 1 forever more. Also, she's funky and strange in a really interesting way.

  14. Portishead / The Rip

Managed to not know this track until recently. I was introduced to Portishead back in 1997 by a street artist who gave me his walkman and a tape of theirs just because we had a brief conversation. I don't know why I stopped to talk with him, but I will never forget that it left me with a new favorite artist and an old school device, and a memory of his random generosity.
