28 / September 2012 / Andy Grogan

I'm lobbing this mix into oblivion.  John and Noah will be otherwise occupied this month as the next generation of Kuhn enters the world; Joe and Kristin don't owe me a response at all since I was so quiet about their recent (very excellent) mixes; and Saunders might still be with her last collection of tunes - lost in the mail somewhere.

This mix is inspired by my recent readings of On Some Faraway Beach: The Life and Times of Brian Eno, Transformer: The Lou Reed Story, and two Roxy Music biographies.

The title is a reference to the 40 years that separate my birth and my soon-to-arrive kid's birth (in December).  Some of this is new to me; some has been on my playlist for years; and some I'm hearing in new ways.  Who knows if my son will like any of this.

Here's a link to the mix on Spotify: 72-12

While guitarists Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd liked to jam, they didn't follow the accepted rock structures for improvisation — they removed the blues while retaining the raw energy of garage rock, adding complex, lyrical solo lines that recalled both jazz and rock. With its angular rhythms and fluid leads Read more on Last.fm more...
