Door Jams

89 / October 2017 / Kristin Kelly

Hey All,

I was locked inside a bathroom. I finally got out. Here's my mix.

(Note: I did write a much longer, wittier and, ultimately, emotional description, but it was erased...multiple times. I think it was Burnmix telling me to just keep it pithy and post a damn mix already. Thank you, Noah, for helping me.)

  1. LP / Lost on You

I find her totally haunting and cool. It's like Patti Smith meets a wonderfully weird warbling lark.

  2. First Aid Kit / Wolf

This is a "call to my women" kind of song. All my year-weary, yet still fierce and wild women.

  4. Rising Appalachia and the Human Experience / Downtown

I get lost in this song.

    More Info from Last.FM

Rising Appalachia and The Human Experience met many years ago on the shores of southern India. After spearheading each of their own unique musical paths, they have joined forces to birth a soulful new electro/acoustic collaboration, merging sounds from around the world in an elaborate artistic love-child of beats, voice, banjo and bass. "Soul Visions" is their first step in the long journey of bringing together electronic music and soul, folk and ballads, bass rhythms and swamp-womp in an effort to bridge worlds through aural exploration. 5. St. Vincent / New York

Brydie says this is the saddest break up song ever. I don't know if I agree, but I can imagine walking down 1st Avenue, especially at :55 in the song, I can feel the heartbreak in it. So it's a contender, for the year, at least.

  6. SYML / Where's My Love-Alternate Version

...but this one might win. The piano sounds like it's crying. Or raining. Or walking in the rain, crying. It's a pretty cryer.

    More Info from Last.FM

Translated as “simple” in Welsh, SYML is the creation of Brian Fennell, Seattle-native and founding member of the band Barcelona. With a keen grasp on textural and emotive songwriting, Fennell combines bare piano, minimalist synth and string-scapes, and etherial vocals to create the sounds of SYML. Accumulating many previous placements in TV and film with Barcelona, Fennell is no stranger to crafting songs that evoke movement and image when you close your eyes. Read more on Last.fm more...

  7. Jason Isbell & Amanda Shires / Mutineer

Nothing like a pirate love song! JK introduced this to me. I just love that a song that starts with "yo ho ho and a bottle of rum" can manage to be taken seriously. Great duet...and they are married. Ah, pirate babies "R" the cutest.

  8. Dan Reeder / Food and Pussy

I had to. (Feels right following a pirate ditty). Heard this song on the pilot of SMILF (highly recommend it), and it stuck. Like I couldn't get it out of my head for days. You're welcome...

Reeder’s second album Sweetheart comprises 15 original songs, plus a cover of Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” that sounds like the demo version Gary Brooker probably dreamed of singing before all that baroque production-work got in the way. 9. Kevin Morby / Beautiful Stranger

Makes me think of Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen...and giants and beanstalks. A lot of nice details in such a simple song.

  10. Noah and The Whale / Waiting For My Chance To Come

I keep discovering new good songs by this band, thanks in part to other burnmixes. It has a definite nod to Tom Petty, so I thought it appropriate to be the penultimate song.

  11. Tom Petty / Free Fallin'

Had to do it. The late, the great (at least 5 songs). And this song was definitely playing in the soundtrack of my life when, after two hours, I finally discovered that the doorstop makes a good makeshift doorknob when you're locked in your own bathroom.
