Dream Sequins

29 / October 2012 / Kristin Kelly

Think of this as a pre-hibernation mix. Lots of sleeping, waking up, ghosts, and strange creatures take place in these songs.  Instead of going with a Halloween theme, I took these monsters and ghosts down a more dreamy route. Maybe it's the leaves changing and that woodsy chill in the air, but I went for pretty in this mix. (Better than broke.) My husband thinks my fall mixes are slower--less "clapping" going on--and maybe that's true.  But I do still think there are uplifting poppy songs in here.  So, clap along.  Even if it's a slow clap.

  5. Faded Paper Figures / North by North

Reminiscent of Postal Service. I love the unexpected electronic sounds mixed with the more organic instrumentation.

    More Info from Last.FM

Bands typically break up after college. People move away, grow apart, or just shrivel up and get jobs. It was good while it lasted, right? But what happens when the music is so good, the band’s listeners so devout, the ambition to keep creating so strong that even the time-draining power of day jobs can’t get in the way? Such is the story of Faded Paper Figures, whose “day jobs” are not exactly easy gigs: Heather Alden is in residency after graduating from medical school (a real doctor!) Read more on Last.fm more...

  7. Sydney Wayser / Dream It Up

She's been my new and go-to for the past few weeks. I'm trying to get her to play at Ode in the Spring. I had a hard time choosing what song. Atlas and Wolf Eyes are both really beautiful. Check her out here. If anyone can find a hat like that, let me know. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLHDlrmruVM

  8. Margot & The Nuclear So And So's / Broadripple is Burning

I'm learning this on the guitar (poorly), so it's been stuck in my head. A little Conor Oberst lyrically. If anyone can explain the woman in the basement, I'd love to know. Makes me think of American Horror Story. With less gore.

  13. Generationals / Faces In The Dark

A thematically relevent and fun song.

    More Info from Last.FM

The two men behind the creation of Generationals - Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer - don't know what they've done. They couldn't possibly have that sort of clairvoyance to perceive the effect that one of the songs they wrote has had on the few and will have on the many before the year is up. The song in question - "When They Fight They Fight" - is a HIT recording the likes of which summers cream for, the likes of which makes everyone go a little woozy and a lot bananas. 15. John Fullbright / Nowhere to Be Found

I heard John Fullbright for the first time on Prairie Home Companion. He sounds like Tom Waits without the whiskey and smoke, and maybe a little Rufus Wainwright thrown in. I was driving at night with the windows down. I may have shed a tear. It was clearly the wind.

  16. The Lumineers / Ho Hey

I had to pick it up a bit after Mr. Fullbright. You probably all know this song, but I've been really into The Lumineers since being introduced to them in a previous mix (I want to say John, but I can't be sure?). This song is undeniably catchy. I'm especially fond of the hey ho's. Trump the "oooh's" in this instance.
