  1. Sylvan Esso / Hey Mami

Sounds like it was recorded under a bridge, a subway station, or some other forgotten place. Pretty but innocuous until 1:33... That drop begs for a stereo with a low end, I pity the laptop speaker that meets this song.

    More Info from Last.FM

Sylvan Esso is a Durham, NC, USA duo of vocalist Amelia Meath and electronic musician Nick Sanborn. Their début was the double A-side 12" Hey Mami / Play It Right (16 Jul 2013), featuring a capella and instrumental versions of each song. Meath’s powerful voice is front and center, unjoined by fellow harmonizers as it is in her folk group, Mountain Man. Sanborn, who plays bass in the genre-destroying Megafaun, creates intricate, pulsing grooves for Meath’s voice to inhabit. 2. San Fermin / Sonsick

Killer voice, love the harmony chorus. These guys just took a turn on Tiny Desk Concerts where they perform this song. It's a little raw live/acoustic, but worth a watch to see the singer belt this sucker out.

    More Info from Last.FM

A pastiche of post-rock, chamber-pop and contemporary classical composition, San Fermin (pronounced SAN fur-MEEN) is the work of Brooklyn composer and songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone. His self-titled debut album is strongly influenced by his unique background in classical music, which includes a job assisting composer/arranger Nico Muhly. After finishing his musical studies at Yale, Ludwig-Leone wrote the album in six weeks while holed up in a studio on the mountainous border between Alberta and British Columbia. 3. Bibio / A tout a l'heure

Love the oddball lyrics and the loping beat underneath. Scattered brains, scattered grains.

    More Info from Last.FM

Bibio is Stephen James Wilkinson from Wolverhampton, England. Wilkinson studied 'Sonic Arts' between 1999 - 2002 at Middlesex University in North London, it was during this time in London he came up with the name Bibio. The name was taken from a small black and red fishing fly which was favoured by his father on their fishing trips to Wales during Stephen's childhood, the name therefore has nostalgic meaning which is often a theme in his music. His recording career as Bibio started with Mush records in 2004. Read more on Last.fm more...

  4. Volcano Choir / Byegone

Justin Vernon's new outfit. Heard this song on Jimmy Fallon before I heard the album. Not a fan of all of it, but this track is a standout for me.

  5. Typhoon / Young Fathers

There has been a lot of chatter online about this record and I'd say it's mostly warranted. I chose this as the highlight. It weaves a bunch of different songs into one. Just great stuff.

  8. Crazy P / Heartbreaker

This is Anna's dance jam when I get home from work.

    More Info from Last.FM

With one of the best live dance music shows on the planet, Crazy P have been leaving their mark on the landscape of British dance music for the last 15 years. To trace the origins of Crazy P we have to go all the way back to 1996. This was the year that brought together James Baron and Chris Todd. 9. Purity Ring / Fineshrine

I hate the name of this band but it's kind of awesome. Great compressed effects on the beat.

  11. Beachwood Sparks / Forget The Song

This is kind of an outlier on this mix. This sounds like a 2013 Beach Boys recording.

  14. Eels / Mansions of Los Feliz

  20. Isbells / Elation

Let's move beyond the obvious Bon Iver comparison. This is just a good solid tune for me.

    More Info from Last.FM

“Your prayers will be heard, the moment you start believing”, Gaëtan Vandewoude from Leuven can be heard singing prophetically on the self-titled debut album of Isbells. And guess what? That’s exactly what happened to him. In his native Belgium he had been trying his luck in various bands for fifteen odd years. He was a drummer with bluesrock combo Ellroy and a guitarist with emocore outfit Soon. But with his thirtieth birthday steadily approaching, Vandewoude felt the urge to go for something a little closer to his heart. Read more on Last.fm more...

  21. Ebony Rhythm Band / Outro

Quick little riff on an Isaac Hayes track that served as the backdrop to this Wutang song

    More Info from Last.FM

Ebony Rhythm Band have an incredible sound that seems to take the heavy bottom of New Orleans Funk and merge it with the trippier elements of Detroit psychedelic soul -- no surprise, considering they hailed from Indianapolis, a point about halfway between the two cities! The tracks on the set have a really great tripped-out groove -- using lots of guitar and organ over heavy rhythms, in a style that's a bit like the Meters at times (dusty groove) Read more on Last.fm more...
