Profile, Texture, Form

120 / May 2020 / Kristin Kelly

It’s the last day of May. Can we call this me being oppositionally punctual? A groundhog who eats its tail to spite its nose. Do groundhogs even have tails? I thought the weeds in my yard were frothing at the mouth, but turns out, it’s the seasonal descent of froghopper spittlebugs, who hide in clouds of their own suds during feedings. Sounds about right. These days, it’s hard to not feel like a poorly executed decoupage made from scraps of old t-shirts and trashy magazines you’ve tried to purge your house of over the course of the past few months, part of a larger goal to be both simpler and more extravagantly creative, inspired by a Zoom tutorial you took with your friends to support a local artist and stay connected with your community. A woman in a podcast I’ve become reliant on says she misses the profile of a face, a person's texture and form. It made me stop what I was doing and cry. One day, we’ll emerge from the sudsy foam of our organized homes, rub our screen-fried eyes, and meet for a drink…maybe it’ll be at a Burnmix barbeque, and it’s a cold beer someone hands you and you take without thought. Until then, we’ll always have the music.

  1. Leon Bridges / River

This wasn’t on tap for the first song until a couple days ago, when the world's trending refrain changed from “They can’t cancel the spring” to “George Floyd: remember his name.” It’s a song that feels like solace, beauty, pain, and strength.

  3. Tallest Man On Earth / The Running Styles of New York

A really atmospherically, geographically, and lyrically apt song for the moment. "And a lifetime gently now sits on the stairs to my home."

  6. The Wailin' Jennys / Wildflowers

A nice pairing with the previous song. I like the slight changes they make to the original. And killer harmonies, obviously.

  7. The Weeknd / Blinding Lights

Heavy hitter on Tik Tok and the like, but catchy as hell. It was part of the kitchen dance party, on repeat. I recommend busting out all your 80's moves. Also, if you have not watched this yet, please do. And consider yourself challenged. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aKMYakbWhk

  8. Laura Marling / For You

This whole album of hers has been a slow burn for me. I had a hard time choosing the song. Obvious Joni Mitchell influences here.

  10. Sugar Candy Mountain / 666

The anti-dance party. With possible satanic leanings. But pretty. Matt and I heard it on my 40th birthday, when we spent a night at Porches. Stars in the sky, no one asking us to cut their apples. The trip was relaxing and a little magical. That's how the song feels to me.

  11. Fiona Apple / I Want You Will Love Me

This was a contender for first song. Not because I love it. In truth, I can't tell if I love or hate it. Maybe both. But I heard it when out running, trying to negotiate face-sweating into an itchy mask, and I heard it and thought, "This is what this whole f-ing thing feels like to me, in this moment." The discord, the crazy, the moment of beautiful reprieve, then back to the absurd. I thought I'd end on it, in case you wish to skip. BUT if you make it to the end of all of it, you will get to hear a porpoise orgasm.
