Comfort Food

82 / March 2017 / Lindsay Schnarr

I think Liz Lemon has it right, on a lot of fronts... especially when it comes to keeping Jack Donaghy around.  Pretty sure that Baldwin has served a central role for all of our abilities to cope lately... to find comedy, common ground, and comfort in the craziness of our new reality.  So this mix is not about anything, other than the simple pleasures that have kept me going since February rolled around.  I hope it brings each of you some of that good stuff we all need.

  1. Wilder Adkins / Side by Side

For all the obvious reasons, this resonates.

    More Info from Last.FM

Wilder Adkins is a miraculous band. our motto is Walk on the wild side. once upon a onion ring, there were three horses who left their favorite guns in the south and walked to the west coast. there, they marched around, half bleary, half lovely, confused and disoriented. Leaving home was like leaping out of a moving camry. the speed and bang they knew had vanished all at once, and they were left traipsing. About 17 months after arriving in Birmingham Read more on Last.fm more...

  2. Blur / Tender

I apologize to all of you who knew this song when it came out in the 90's and either hated it then, or hate it now. I never knew it in its day, but it feels right now. It's long but I love the groove it gets me in.

  4. Aesop Rock / Rings

Had a random chance to see the Ace at Pearl Street last month, and I gotta say... dude can still flow. His lyrical abilities are truly masterful. He's talking bout his lost talent as an artist in this tune. This one's for you JK... not all rap is crap!

  7. The xx / Replica

I find the maturity in the xx's voices and musical fabrication noticeable in this track. They've maintained the simplicity and hollow resonance of their signature sound but it feels richer and more grounded... to me anyway. This track is lyrically about fear of repeating the mistakes of generations past. So grown up... ;)

  8. Christine and the Queens / IT

This woman, is fantastic. I included 3 of her tracks on this mix only because I couldn't include 4. Joe already plugged her hit "Tilted" - probably the best on her recent debut album. Here I believe she is referencing her desire to embody the power of being a "man" in our world.

More about this queen... despite my disdain for Kanye, this version of his song is deeply penetrating and god, her voice.

  16. Christine and the Queens / Saint Claude

And to end with a story... this singer in her live shows describes seeing a man walking the streets of Paris, ridiculed for looking like a "freak." She witnessed this but didn't stand up to the bullies. Out of her shame for not speaking up she wrote this song, to apologize and honor the man under attack, and for all those who are proud to be who they are no matter what happens as a result. She dedicated the name, Saint Claude, to this man who she never knew. We need more of these saints in this world.
