  1. The Monkees / Me and Magdalena

  5. Beyoncé (feat. The Dixie Chicks) / Daddy Lessons

KRISTIN: I'm pro stricter gun laws, but I would get behind arming Beyonce and the Dixie Chicks. On my Marching Songs mix for Jan. 21st.

Since 2009 he’s been making music under the name Bahamas--writing songs about sunsets, love affairs, and making out with crooked smiles. Through simple arrangements, he charts an escape route from the snow belt to the coral reefs. His album, Barchords, was released in 2012 to critical praise: Read more on Last.fm more...

  7. Pinegrove / Old Friends

NOAH: I almost put this song on my last mix, but at the time it felt too "emo" to me. I've since reconsidered and learned to love it. I love the transition from the first to second verse. The lazy drums that come in just a bit behind the vocals at 1:06. Worth watching the Tiny Desk Concert below if you like it at all. A good reminder to get out of your own head sometimes: "I should call my parents when I think of them / I should tell my friends when I love them."

  8. Lucius / Dusty Trails

NOAH: Lucius made an appearance on Burnmix 45 (Kristin / February 2014), and their vocals definitely caught my ear then. Their new record is really great and their harmonies just put me under a spell. Just out of control. They also did a turn on the show Roadies that I've mentioned before, performing this song acoustic in the back of the bus. I can't find that online so I'm embedding a live version they did from an NPR concert. If it doesn't start on this song, go to 27:30.

  11. Rayland Baxter / Mr. Rodriguez

JOHN: Heard this for the first time on Christmas Day on a Google channel that Noah had dialed in as we were preparing dinner. I Shazamed it and haven’t been able to stop listening to it. I love that it’s mixed so you can actually hear the lyrics - and also love that it has a classic verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/verse/chorus structure. I understand he is from Nashville. Maybe Andy knows him. Maybe he’s a friend of Bonnie’s. Regardless, I love this tune. It is, however, from 2015. I will be on the lookout for a live show in the area - that is for sure.

Rayland Baxter (stylized as rayLand Baxter) is an American alternative country musician from Nashville, Tennessee. He is currently signed to ATO Records. Baxter is the son of musician Bucky Baxter. It’s hard to pinpoint the moment that songs are born, the day casual hummers become singers or scribblers become songwriters. Rayland Baxter certainly can’t, and he wouldn’t want to. Though he grew up in Nashville to the sounds of his father’s pedal steel, he didn’t dream of being a rock star. Read more on Last.fm more...

  12. The Revivalists / Wish I Knew You

JOHN: Mary turned me onto this song while visiting Charlottesville. Love the feel of this - almost has a sort of Motown vibe at times - and I dig the jangly guitar part. It will give me away, but I don’t care. These guys, from New Orleans, must also be great live. I’ll be on the lookout for them playing locally as well. This tune is also from 2015. Downloaded a boatload of 2016 songs recently and many will be on my next mix. But this and Rayland rose to the top of the heap to my old ears.

  13. Kishi Bashi / Honeybody

JOE: A playful closer from one of the most dramatic and intricate albums of the year. Although the rest of Sonderlust is true to its name, I love the simplicity of Honeybody - especially the touched up staccato strings. It was also one of two tracks I was able to get onto my kids’ playlist. A breathe of fresh air after the Kidz Bop’s version of the Bieber’s Sorry.

  15. Drive-By Truckers / What It Means

SAUNDERS: A powerful message about questioning the social status quo. Our inclination to segregate ourselves from people different than us, unconsciously or knowingly, makes us completely out of touch with others' plight. It's not enough to be "progressive" or read the news and complain.

  16. Miranda Lambert / Vice

SAUNDERS: Aside from a great melody, the guitar and the edginess of Miranda's voice make this song a welcome surprise from a musician I underestimated.
