Neo-Soul Undercurrents

117 / February 2020 / Joe Choi

I know it’s a few years old but Frank Ocean’s ‘Blonde’ was a constant for me throughout the past year.  ‘Nikes’, ‘Solo’ and ‘Nights’ were all on various iterations of this mix at one point until I came across the ‘Biking’ record, which serves as this mix's main inspiration.  The first six tracks have been locked in for the past couple months and they do a good job of maintaining the slower-tempo neo-soul vibe that I was going for.  The rest of is a bit of a mixed bag with the Steve Lacy and Anderson .Paak tracks as last minute additions.  The building in the photo is the Pier 99 Sanitation Pier in NYC right at the edge of the Hudson River Park and Riverside Park. Hope you’re all doing well and you find something you enjoy!
