Out of Protest

91 / December 2017 / Lindsay Schnarr

I'm probably not alone in feeling somewhat suprised, shocked even, by the momentum of the "me too" movement.  What began as a collective social media moment has perhaps more rapidy that I've ever seen before, become a national monsoon of change.  The stories shared by the "silence breakers" speak volumes on their own, but somehow through the resonant sharing of these truths, a much sharper note has been reached.

I don't believe a single person can honestly say they haven't looked deep within themselves during the past month to examine just what part each of us play in the social constructs that have left so many tangled between the extremes of the male/female power imbalance. Whether we like to admit it or not, the truth is, we've all played a role in this social construct and are now being challenged to reevaluate ourselves and our part in this cultural narrative.

I put this list together originally as a sort of attempt to find some balance between our male and female voices... literally toggeling between the two from one song to the next.  I aimed to represent a spirit of strength behind the lyrics or feelings conveyed.  Some songs are just fun (because we have to fit that in somewhere!) but for the most part, this playlist reflects the spirit this movement has had on me.  I have been deeply struck by the power of protest, and while some days feel like there's nothing that will ever really become of our (at times tiny) voices, this past month has proven something else... something worthy of celebrating and remembering the potential that can, sometimes, arise when we speak out for what we believe in.
