Shi-Boo-Ya

27 / August 2012 / Joe Choi

What's up burnmixers! I know I haven't done my part but in an effort to stir it up a little I'm going to invoke a new rule...please state one track from my mix (excluding Endless Rain) that deserves the boot (because it sucks or you feel that it doesn't fit) and also a song that you think would've fit better.

So Shi-Boo-Ya! I spent nearly four weeks in Japan for work. It's just a fascinating country and a life experience that I wanted to capture with this mix.  Knowing that my burnmix month was around the corner I tried to watch a lot of Japanese Mtv but it was almost all J-pop - too much even for me.  The record stores were also no help because everything except the American stuff was in Japanese.  So I started with the few bands with Japan in their name and carried on from there.  This mix went all over the place and at different times deserved to be called Shi-blue-ya and at others Shi-BOO-Yah!  It ended up somewhere in the middle - hope you guys enjoy it and hopefully we'll get to meet up soon.

Shout out to my subaru - it went 243,000 strong.

  1. Kavinsky and Lovefoxxx / Nightcall

The perfect leading track for Shi-Boo-Ya. Synthy, a little eerie, with sketchy deep vocals. From the movie Drive - one of my favorites. Lovefoxxx is part Japanese.

  3. The Japanese Popstars / Shells of Silver

These guys are generally straight up house music but this track stands alone and leaves me wishing there was more like it.

    More Info from Last.FM

The Japanese Popstars are ravenous. Since they first tasted success in 2006 with their first two releases on a small indie dance label, their career has been one smooth, upward curve. But now that line is about to take a sharp rise vertically. Three lads from Northern Ireland who have spent the last two years racking up the air miles as they’ve taken their coruscating live show to all four corners of the globe… and still found time to make the record of their lives with their second album, ‘Controlling Your Allegiance’. 4. Japan / Ghosts

Wrestled with removing this track a handful of times. At one point I had centered the entire mix around it but the mix sounded too slow and depressing. In the end, it needed to stay, if not just for their name - but I think it fits here.

  5. Japandroids / Evil's Sway

Question: Who do these guys sound like? One of their album covers has a picture of Jesus with his arms stretched out and a blindfold over his eyes - white background I think. This has been driving me nuts for weeks.

  9. Beach House / Myth

I'm curious to hear how you guys feel about this album? I've never listened to a pre-released track more than this one and I may have ruined the album for myself. Needless to say, I was happy to see that it didn't show up on Noah's mix.

  10. Missing Persons / Walking in L.A.

I heard this track two separate times during my stay in Japan. I thought it was a new Yeah Yeah Yeahs track but was surprised to find out that it's an oldy. Japan and Missing Persons both impress me with how progressive they sound.
