Excuses, Excuses

71 / April 2016 / Kristin Kelly

There was an Easter Egg hunt that dragged on, a slow hike uphill, a weekend with the in-laws that got messy. There were three birthday parties, two for teething toddlers. A poet and a Y.A. novelist crashed at my house. (Stories told, emotions had, some got old, some not so bad.) I got henna-ed in New Haven, so my hands had to dry. Marlowe took off on her scooter; I had to go after her. Stuck in traffic on the turnpike. There were four nieces and nephews to corall in a hotel. My brother almost caught fire during a Hindu ritual, so I was waiting to put him out. Later, I had to dance with the Indian aunties, then sleep, then catch a bumpy plane to a flat beach. And then, only then, could I post my inappropriately late burnmix.

  1. The Lumineers / Ophelia

My top song of the past few months. Stuck in my head so many mornings you may not want to have coffee with me more than once. I know it's probably already over-played, but I couldn't leave it off. Loving the whole album, especially Cleopatra and Gun Song.

  2. Meg Mac / Roll Up Your Sleeves

My daughter's most requested song, after "The Lucy Song" (Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) . She can sing "roll up sleeves" and she can clap, so she feels like Beyonce. If she knew who Beyonce was.

    A Brydie rec.

  6. You Won't / Television

Weird band name, but I've loved them since Noah introduced them on a mix a while back. I also really love clapping as percussion, as you may have noticed in previous mixes. Cue the applause.

During this period of geographical separation Read more on Last.fm more...

  7. The Kooks / Tick of Time

An old favorite of mine that seemed to fit on this mix. I apologize to John...I think it might have been on one of the first pre-burnmixer cd's I made for him. I was first introduced to this song at a teenage talent show (I was a camp counselor for a wonderful mix of awkward and sweet burgeoning "young writers".) A pretty girl from New York sang it while a painfully shy boy from who knows where barely managed to keep the rhythm on guitar. It was heartbreakingly good.
